Incidence of Renal Necrosis in Weanling Rats following Short Term Ingestion of Alcohol by Gerald

چکیده
In the accompanying paper (1) it is reported that rats maintained on a diet rnargiI~ in lipotropic activity developed fatty infiltration and fibrosis of the liver when given 15 per cent alcohol in lieu of drinking water or an isocaloric equivalent of sucrose over a period of 7 months. Since the hepatic changes could be prevented by supplementing the diet with choline or methionine, the possibility was considered that both alcohol and sucrose had induced a relative choline deficiency by increasing the number of calories consumed. However, it was found that restricting the caloric intake at the expense of sucrose in the basal diet did not abolish the effects of alcohol, although it did in the case of sucrose supplements. This suggested that (1) if alcohol increased the choline requirement it did not do so by augmenting the caloric intake, and (2) the modes of action of alcohol and sucrose were probably different, despite the similaxity of the hepatic lesions they produced. I t was pointed out that the effectiveness of lipotropic substances in preventing fatty infiltration and fibrosis of the liver did not conclusively establish the validity of the hypothesis that alcohol had created a relative choline deficiency. In particular the possibility was not excluded that alcohol had exerted a direct toxic action and that choline and methionine had merely hastened the removal of hepatic fat, as in the case of carbon tetrachloride poisoning (2).

The Study of Histomorphometry and Histochemistry of Liver in Adult Male and Female Rats Following Short-term and Long-term Administration of Methylphenidate
Background & Objective: Methylphenidate is one of the most common medications used for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The administration of methylphenidate, through blocking of dopamine receptors and increment of extracellular dopamine levels, leads to escalation in central nervous system activity. Numerous studies investigated the effect of methylphenidate on bod...

The Daniel Fast is a biblically inspired dietary program rich in carbohydrate, most closely resembling a vegan diet but with additional restrictions, including the elimination of processed foods, white flour products, preservatives, additives, sweeteners, caffeine, and alcohol. While no specific requirements are placed on the ingestion of specific percentages of macronutrients, the mean daily c...
متن کاملMICROSOME-MEDIATED BENZO[A]PYRENE-DNA BINDING AND INHIBITION BY CYTOSOLIC FRACTIONS FROM LIVER AND SKIN OF ADULT AND WEANLING RATS
Biotransformation of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in the presence of microsomal fractions derived from liver and epiderm of adult and weanling rats was examined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of age on the capacity of two organs in transformation of BaP. Subcellular fractions were prepared from skin and liver by ultracentrifugation and were used as the source of BaP metabolizing enzy...
متن کاملBinge-like ingestion of a combination of an energy drink and alcohol leads to cognitive deficits and motivational changes
The combination of alcohol with an energy drink (ED) is believed to contribute to risky alcohol-drinking behaviors, such as binge drinking. However, the long-term effects on cognition and reward function that are caused by the repeated binge-like ingestion of alcohol and EDs are still poorly known. The present study examined the effects of a history of repeated exposure to alcohol and/or an ED ...
متن کاملShort-term menhaden oil rich diet changes renal lipid profile in acute kidney injury.
Weanling male Wistar rats fed a choline-deficient diet develop acute kidney injury. Menhaden oil, which is a very important source of omega-3 fatty acids, has a notorious protective effect. The mechanism of this protection is unknown; one possibility could be that menhaden oil changes renal lipid profile, with an impact on the functions of biological membranes. The aim of this work was to study...
